    Audemars Piguet Watches What wristwatch costs $1,600,000?

    Question by Venus 1485AD: What wristwatch costs ,600,000?
    I am Italian, and I own several nice watches. Today, I wear a $ 8795 Omega “5886.90.56″ with 41 diamonds around the dial. At a dance studio, I met a Japanese girl who has the same birthday I do, 6/5. She wore a fancy watch recently that she said her boyfriend bought for her birthday. It is a $ 36,400 Audemars Piguet “Lady Millenary” with 112 diamonds. For her 2007 birthday, he bought her a $ 15,700 Piaget “Polo”. He owns 50 watches made 1893 to recently. One is a $ 58,200 Breguet perpetual calendar. I saw one he wore that has dials on both front and back with many hands and small dials on them. It would take time to learn what all this watch has on it. She said it is a limited-edition of some sort that cost $ 1,600,000. I was stunned by such a watch, so I did not follow what she said about it. Does anyone have any idea what watch is so complicated and costs so much?
    I am evidently much less rich than my Japanese friend and her boyfriend. I cannot afford her watches or his certainly. This couple has plenty of brains. People with less money and brains envy them. It takes brains to make enough money to buy all of these costly watches, i.e. 50 for him and several for her.

    Audemars Piguet Watches Why do some people believe Rolex is the costliest watch brand?

    Question by Sin-Laan: Why do some people believe Rolex is the costliest watch brand?
    Some of us know a Chinese guy Ken Fong who says many things that make us scratch our heads. He said one of his friends said Rolex is the costliest watch brand, and many people seem to agree with that. I saw some questions on here that indicate such a belief. One of my friends has a 2008 watch almanac, and I will now give prices from it of ten sports wristwatches with steel cases and bracelets and self-wind movements for showing hours, minutes, seconds and date in a countdown from cheapest to costliest.
    9. $ 5050 Rolex “Oyster Perpetual Datejust” ($ 5450 in 2010, I hear)
    8a. $ 5600 IWC “Ingenieur” is 1.11 times costlier than the comparable Rolex
    8b. $ 5600 Ulysse Nardin “San Marco” is also 1.11 times costlier
    7. $ 6900 Glashutte Original “Sport Evolution M” is 1.37 times costlier
    6. $ 8100 Panerai “Luminor Marina Automatic” is 1.60 times costlier
    5. $ 8300 Franck Muller “Conquistador” is 1.64 times costlier
    4. $ 10,400 Vacheron Constantin “Overseas” is 2.02 times costlier ($ 11,600 in 2010)
    3. $ 11,200 Audemars Piguet “Royal Oak” is 2.22 times costlier
    2. $ 13,500 Breguet “Marine” is 2.67 times costlier
    1. $ 20,600 Patek Philippe “Nautilus” is 4.08 times costlier than the similar Rolex ($ 23,000 in 2010)
    I can make lists of other types of watches and they also prove my point. A list of basic dress watches has even more difference in price that this one of basic sports watches. Rolex’s most complicated watch is a “Cosmograph Daytona” chronograph, but the other companies listed here make much more complicated watches than chronographs. The ultimate single complication is the chiming watch, and costliest is Vacheron Constantin’s “30010″ minute repeater for $ 631,000 in a platinum skeleton version. Franck Muller’s “Aeternitas Mega 4″ combines all of the major complications for $ 2,700,000. Rolex’s costliest watch is one with many diamonds for $ 120,000, but Vacheron Constantin’s “Kallista” was valued at $ 9,000,000 in 2000 and is totally covered with many big diamonds perfectly matched for color. The most valuable watch of all cost someone $ 11,002,500 in 1999. It is the Patek Philippe “Graves Supercomplication” that was finished in 1932 for banker Henry Graves, Junior who wanted to own the most complicated pocketwatch in the world.
    Joe, many costly watch brands use platinum and gold of three colors, and I list steel watches here. Rolex has some jewelry watches, but Vacheron Constantin puts it to shame with its “Kalla” line. One of my friends says a watch repair man he knows does not like Rolex movements. Rolex watches are good, but Patek Philippe watches are much better, as their prices show.
    Frank, you seem to be onto something at first, but you end badly. Why question my motives? That is rude and none of anyone’s business. I will say I am curious, and I have friends who know much about watches. One had a 2008 watch almanac with her, so I looked in it. We know a man who has written books about watches, so we plan to discuss such matters with him whenever we can. I own some nice watches. An Italian girl I met recently owns some costly watches. She said her cheapest one is a Rolex, and her costliest one is a Vacheron Constantin. She wears Gucci clothing and drives a Lamborghini car.
    Aiya, Miyuki, I can see from your fine answer that you know much about watches. I already knew you know much about martial arts from your website about them. Do you also have a website about watches? If you do, tell me how to access it! I know I could learn much if you do. I am astonished to see such specific details about the founding of Rolex and the amounts many top brands spend upon advertising. Frank had a good idea in saying Rolex advertises much, but he became rude at the end, so your answer is much better with such specifics and politeness, as I have learned to expect from Japanese people.
    Jeffrey, you have some fascinating information too. I can hardly believe anyone finances a watch for five years. Such people must spend all of their money on gadgets and eat at missions. I suppose may of them become bankrupt. I can imagine a filthy street man trying to pawn his Rolex to buy a hamburger. Is it true what you said about Rolex making more watches in a year than Patek Philippe has made in its 170 year history?

    Answer by Joe
    The brand was built up quite simply, They use very costly metals like gold and platinum, combined it with part hand made manufacturing process (DUHH!) and then put a bunch of really expensive gemstones in there in most watches, and then finally to make a profit, they made some cheaper made watches and charged for the but up brand name!!!

    To protect the innocent:
    Im not in a the watch business but, Im definatly on the marketing and manufacturing side of the subject!

      Rolex used a massive marketing campaign to help position the brand at the high end, and many people have seen those ads, whereas other brands do not spend as much on mass marketing.

      Many brands, including Rolex, offer models that go into six figures.

      Why you care enough to bother researching this so carefully is probably the more important question.

      1905 Hans Wilsdorf begin watch making, 1908 he invent name Rolex and use it at his watches. Many people believe what they see at news media. Rolex have largest advertising budget of any watch brand, thus everyone hear of Rolex, not know some better brands, since they not advertise much. Here are some figures of 2007 USA advertising budgets of some watch brands.
      1. Rolex – $ 47,100,000
      2. Breitling – $ 27,070,000
      3. TAG Heuer – $ 24,730,000
      4. Citizen – $ 19,850,000
      5. Movado – $ 15,870,000
      6. Cartier – $ 15,040,000
      7. Seiko – $ 11,020,000
      8. Timex – $ 10,210,000
      9. ESQ – $ 9,360,000
      10. Omega – $ 9,250,000
      … … … … … … … … … … …
      14. Patek Philippe – $ 6,030,000
      … … … … … … … … … … … … … …
      19. Jaeger-LeCoultre – $ 4,770,000
      20. IWC – $ 4,420,000
      21. Ulysse Nardin – $ 4,280,000
      Rolex spend nearly 8 times so much so Patek Philippe, thus more people hear of Rolex compared of Patek Philippe. My lover Kyojin own 1893 Patek Philippe watch, it is so accurate so most new watches.

      Many people believe lots of malarkey for no good reason. “Believe” is a good choice of words for you to use in this question, because “beliefs” are blindly accepted without any proof. There are many things that are badly over-rated, e.g. Bruce Lee in martial arts, Mohammed Ali in boxing, Cadillac in cars … and Rolex in watches. There are PR men, creators of hoaxes, politicians, preachers and such frauds who want to make people believe lies for their own selfish reasons. Miyuki knows her watches I can see. She told the history of Rolex and gave specific figures for the amounts of money spent in America on advertising some watch brands. It’s interesting to contrast her figures and yours, e.g. the Patek Philippe “Nautilus” costs 408% the price of the Rolex “Datejust”, but Patek spends only 13% as much money on advertising as Rolex does. Most people have no real basis for their naive opinions, and Rolex is hyped. Any product that has such market saturation in advertising as Rolex does is bound to be seen by everyone, so they imagine it’s a very good and very costly brand. I own a Rolex “Datejust” I bought soon after graduating from college. Today, I’m wearing a Fortis pilot’s watch that costs $ 2050, but it keeps time better than my $ 5450 Rolex that cost 273% more. In Houston, I saw a jewelry store that offered five year financing on Rolexes. That shows Roles is the upstart’s dream. I don’t buy any watch unless I pay cash for it. Long-term financing is for houses and cars, not watches. The ignorant upstarts wear Rolexes, while the sophisticated and classy rich men wear Patek Philippes, Breguets and Vacheron Constantins. I heard someone say Rolex makes more watches in a year than Patek Philippe has in its entire 175 or so year history. That’s true of many of the most exclusive watch brands I think.

    • Bizhen 1:43 am on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

      One of my former boyfriends wrote several books about watches. One rates the costliest brands, and Breguet was costliest overall in the first three editions of his book. Patek Philippe placed second twice and fourth once. Vacheron Constantin placed third twice and second once. A. Lange of Germany rivals the top three Swiss brands by placing third once and fourth once. It was not rated in the first edition of the book, because it had few models and could not be firmly rated. The next brands have changed over the years. Prices change erratically. Between the first and second editions, Cartier increased its prices by 16.67%, but Piaget increased some of its prices by a whopping 45%, and thus Piaget moved up from 14th to 8th place, and Cartier dropped from 12th to 14th. Blancpain decreased most of its prices by a large amount, e.g. the basic dress watch dropped from $ 9050 to $ 7000, so Blancpain that was in the top five dropped to barely in the top twenty. Rolex placed 24th.
      Another book gives details about the beginnings of watch brands and the ranges of prices and types each offers. Rolex was begun by Hans Wilsdorf in 1908 as the new name for Wilsdorf & Co. that began in 1905. Antoine Norbert de Patek and Francois Czapek began making watches in 1839. In 1845, they hired master watchmaker Adrien Philippe. Soon, Francois Czapek left the business, and the company was incorporated as Patek Philippe, rather than Patek & Czapek, in 1851.
      As a couple of people have said, Rolex is advertised much more than any other brand. It appeals to bourgeois parvenus, while Patek Philippe appeals more to the higher classes and thus does not need so much advertising. Some highly exclusive watchmakers produce low numbers of watches, but they spend more time upon each watch than mass-produced brands do. Rolex has the most COSC rated chronometers of any brand, and that impresses naive people. Jaeger-LeCoulter gives its watches much tougher tests than the COSC does, thus it does not need a COSC rating. A Rolex “Datejust” is a good sports watch, but a Jaeger-LeCoultre “Master” is a really great one. A Patek Philippe “Nautilus” is now the costliest basic sports watch, but some years ago, the Breguet “Marine” was. About 1998, the “Marine cost $ 29,600 with gold bracelet, while the “Nautilus” cost $ 28,000″. I think the Rolex “Datejust” cost $ 15,000 then with gold bracelet, and the Jaeger-LeCoultre “Master” cost $ 18,000 or so. Swatch acquired Breguet and has repositioned it at a lower price for some reason. Rolex is still an independent firm, as is Patek Philippe. They are hardly in the same class, however. Patek Philippe appeals to the highest classes of refined and sophisticated people, and Rolex appeals to the lower middle class who may finance one of its watches for five years, as Jeffrey told us.

    Audemars Piguet Watches How Would You Rank These Premium Watch Brands?

    Question by Andrew W: How Would You Rank These Premium Watch Brands?
    I have an Omega Seamaster GMT that I got a good 4 years ago now. I love it, its been dead accurate for me day in and day out as an every day watch that I wear to the office and everywhere else. I was wondering from actual watch collectors what watches were preferred for quality, durability, accuracy and overall value. I have included a list of brands I have come across through my friends, business associates, ect. If you could rank these watches I’d be interested in your thoughts and feel free to add a brand that I have missed if you feel it is nessisary.

    Audemars Piguet
    Baume & Mercier
    Breitling
    Bulova
    Cartier
    Fortis
    Girard Perregaux
    Montblanc
    Movado
    Omega
    Oris
    Patek Philippe

      Brands that I would add to your list:
      Panerai, Hamilton, IWC, A. Lange & Sohne, Stowa, Laco (Lacher & Co.,) Ball, Sinn… A few of the brands are not as expensive as some of those listed, but they hold their own in quality, durability, accuracy, overall value, and history.

      A few that I would remove:
      Movado, Tissot… Just my humble opinion.

    Audemars Piguet Watches Which RDW4fa Watch(es) do you think I should add to my collection?

    Question by miyuki & kyojin: Which RDW4fa Watch(es) do you think I should add to my collection?
    Arigato (Thank you) for your advice in this matter! I wrote 5 books on watches and use abbreviations in them to save space. RDW = Round Dress Watch, and 4fa = 4-function (hour, minute, second & date) automatic (self-wind)! I own over 50 watches, including some nice RDW2fm (hour & minute only manual-wind) models by Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, Piaget, etc. and a few RDW3fm (hour, minute & second manual-wind) watches by LeCoultre, Tiffany & Co., IWC, etc., but my 4fa watches are all Sports Models, so I need a few Dress Models as well. Here are some current models I am considering. Which one or ones should I purchase first do you think?
    $ 25,800R (18kt rose gold) A. Lange & Sohne “Saxonia 315″
    $ 23,800R, W (18kt white gold) Patek Philippe “Calatrava 5296″
    $ 20,650Y (18kt yellow gold),$ 21,600W Breguet “Classique 5177″
    $ 20,100W Audemars Piguet “Jules Audemars 15120BC”
    $ 19,300R Paul Picot “Atelier Classic”
    $ 19,100R Vacheron Constantin “Patrimony Contemporaire”
    $ 18,100R Hermes “Dressage DR1.770″
    $ 17,300R Cartier “Ballon Bleu”
    $ 16,100R Parmigiani “Kalpa Tonda”
    $ 15,000R Corum “Romulus 41″
    $ 13,600R Omega “DeVille 431″
    $ 12,800R Glashutte Original “Senator Sixties”
    $ 12,600R Blancpain “Villeret 5223″
    $ 12,450R Chopard “LUC Twin Jose Carreras”
    $ 11,999R Ball “Trainmaster NM1098D”
    $ 11,500R Girard-Perregaux “1966″
    $ 10,800R Faberge “Agathon M1102″
    $ 10,500R Eterna “Vaughan 7360″
    $ 7000R IWC “Portofino”
    To buy all 19 watches listed would cost at least $ 298,499, so I could do that, but I do not really want so many of one type. My Blancpain “1735″ cost $ 1,000,000 in 2000, and my Vacheron Constantin “Tour de l’Ile” cost $ 1,600,000 in 2006, so I can easily pay $ 298,499 for 19 fine watches. I wanted advice on choosing a few of the ones available now. I already own watches by 12 of the brands listed but not by the 7 other brands. I hoped someone had experience with them.

      I think first buy Patek Philippe, A. Lange & Sohne, Vacheron Constantin and Breguet, these brands all hold value, are great watches, if want more next buy Audemars Piguet, Blancpain and Cartier, some brands use generic ETA movements, charge high prices of them, not buy Ball or Paul Picot.

    • Olga 11:12 pm on October 2, 2011 Permalink | Reply

      One of my contacts answered a similar question to this one, and she said that the Patek Philippe is the best investment, because it holds its value best and sells for higher prices at auctions than other brands. The costliest ones are surely the best ones to buy, if you can afford them, and you say you could buy them all. If you want four, buy the A. Lange, Patek, Breguet and Audemars I think.

    • Chen-Chu L 11:28 pm on October 2, 2011 Permalink | Reply

      I answered a simpler version of this question recently. A man was considering Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet. I can tell you much the same thing I told the other man. Patek Philippe is the king at auctions, so you should buy it as an investment for certain. The other man bought the Patek “Calatrava 5296R” that is one of your choices, and I think you should too. You already have a “RDW2fm” Patek, so a “RDW4fa” Patek goes well with it. Breguet, Vacheron and A. Lange are next to Patek in prestige, so buy them next. Good third choices would be Audemars, Cartier, Parmigiani and Glashutte I think.

    • Venus 1485AD 11:39 pm on October 2, 2011 Permalink | Reply

      There are several considerations in such a choice as this one. One is to consider the movements, and that’s an esoteric subject. The Ball, Cartier, IWC, Omega and Paul Picot use generic ETA 2892 movements, so you can do better than that. Frederic Piguet movements are somewhat more exclusive and used in the Blancpain, Corum and Faberge models. Hermes now uses Vaucher movements, so it’s fairly exclusive too. Breguet movements are works of art, whatever their source. Piaget made some, and LeMania made some. Now I think LeMania has merged with Breguet and the movements are just labeled Breguet. Some brands use their own movements and are thus much more exclusive than the ones already listed. Brands using their own movements include Audemars Piguet, Chopard, Eterna, Girard-Perreagux, Glashutte Original, A. Lange & Sohne, Parmigiani, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. Patek Philippe’s new Calibre 324SC used in the “Calatrava 5296″ you list is also used in modified form in other models, including an annual calendar, and it’s quite innovative and advanced, so extra consideration should be given to the watch using it. Patek Philippe’s other watches of the type you specify use the older calibre 315SC that is less advanced, so by all means buy the “5296″. It’s a great investment, as some other answers said. Patek Philippe holds its value best of the top brands, so every man who owns costly watches should own several Patek Philippes.

    Probably not… Depends on where you purchased it, how much you paid, and you can’t really tell unless you open the watch up…its the “inside” of the watch, which will really tell you if it’s really real or fake…

    Audemars Piguet Watches Which of my 50 watches should I wear to San Francisco opera?

    Question by miyuki & kyojin: Which of my 50 watches should I wear to San Francisco opera?
    Serious answers only, please! Violators will be reported. With “white tie” formal ensemble, which of my 50 watches are appropriate? Here is a sample of ten: 1. $ 12,500 Vacheron Constantin “Patrimony XL”, 2.$ 12,100 Cartier “Tank L.C.”, 3. $ 10,700 Cartier “Santos Dumont”, 4.$ 14,200 Breguet “5157″, 5.$ 15,000 Patek Philippe “5120″, 6.$ 9600 Jaeger-LeCoultre “Reverso G.T.”, 7.$ 28,200 Breguet “Marine”, 8.$ 21,000 Audemars Piguet “Royal Oak”, 9.$ 38,300 Blancpain “4246F”, 10.$ 55,900 Breguet “5257″! All are 18 kt. gold. Most have leather straps, but #7 has a gold bracelet. An old tradition says one should not wear a watch with the most formal clothing, but many men ignore that now.
    #1-5 show only hour & minute. #6 has hr., min. 7 sec. #7 & 8 show hr., min., sec. & date. #9 is a chronograph rattrapante. #10 is a perpetual calendar. Prices are clues to people unfamiliar with these watches. I have limited space, so I gave prices before fuller descriptions. I rarely carry a cell phone, and it’s time is not as accurate as my watches.

      Wow…………..um, personally, I would say one that does not have a leather strap, but, a metal bracelet (since it’s a formal event). So, I guess that’s #7.

      Random question: why did you list the prices?

      Who cares what watch you wear you probably carry a cell phone and the time is on the cell phone. Who is gonna see your watch for the most part the actors on stage, I doubt that.

      Hope you have enough insurance for your watch collection.

    Audemars Piguet Watches Can I sell a (possibly) stolen watch?

    Question by Chauncey: Can I sell a (possibly) stolen watch?
    About 8 months ago I bought a Audemars Piguet watch from an arts and crafts open-air marketplace in Oregon. It’s a beautiful watch. I’ve been wearing it ever since. I knew the brand name. However other then knowing names like Audemars Piguet or Rolex I really don’t know the first thing about what constitutes and a good watch from a bad one. Just recently I got curious and looked up some Piguet watches E-bay. I was pretty shocked on the price value. Assuming mine is authentic it appears to be a “Edward Piguet” 18K White gold chrono” witch is worth 27,000 retail.

    Considering the circumstances. I assume the watch is ether fake or stolen. However, The “market” is a legit arts and crafts market regulated by the city. So I doubt these businesses would be selling stolen goods… I don’t remember too much about the sale. I think I paid around 150.00 dollars. I don’t know really anything at all about watches to be honest. But I recognized the brand Audemars Piguet as a really good quality and thought I was getting a good deal.

    Obviously I have zero experience or knowledge in deducing fake watches from authentic ones. However, When looking at all the pictures posted from other authentic “EDWARD PIGUET” 18K WHITE GOLD CHRONO watches. Mine looks identical in markings, engravings and color. I’ve made a few inquires on a couple watch and jewelry forums on the web. But I cant find a definitive answer as to my next course of action.

    Ideally; I want to sell it. Assuming its authentic. But for all I know, it could be stolen. I don’t want to put a stolen watch on ebay…How can I authenticate it?

    Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    Chauncey

      Take it to a local jeweller. He can tell you if it is fake or not. If you want to find out if it has been stolen, check with your local police precinct.

      Take it to a good jewelry store and ask them about it. Just ask them to determine the condition it’s in. Has it been properly treated? If they want to know where you got it you can say you just inherited it from some relative. The watch can be real and it doesn’t have to be stolen. While it’s difficult to get a good deal from one of these markets, it can happen. The city certainly can’t examine everything sold at one of these markets. Frankly, I’m not a fan of the design of these watches. If I had one that I didn’t know the value of, I’m not sure I’d think it was a very expensive watch. You should find out if you got a good deal or got taken. I’ve never heard of the brand before but a quick check on the net says they are indeed expensive.
